Week 1/ La primera semana

Week one Down! I have been having a blast so far in Ecuador. I am one of four volunteers one of which is from Italy named Cinto and an amazing cook. The other two volunteers my age, Colin and Nathan, are both from the United States and we have been spending most of our time together. We have done so much that it seems like we have been here for a lot longer than one week. Tuesday through Thursday this week we had teachers workshops from 9am till 5pm and on Friday we only had presentations in the morning. We are unsure if we are going to teach english this year because of all of the changes going on at the center but we will definitely be working with the children in the afternoon for extra curricular activities. Things have been pretty hectic so we are just working on our patience and going with the flow.
Termino Semana uno! Me estoy divertiendo mucho en Ecuador. Soy uno de los cuatro voluntarios uno de los cuales es de Italia que se llama Cinto y un cocinero increíble. Los otros dos voluntarios de mi edad, Colin y Nathan, son de los Estados Unidos y hemos estado pasando la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo juntos. Hemos hecho tanto que parece que hemos estado aquí por mucho más de una semana. De martes a jueves de esta semana tuvimos talleres de maestros de 9 am a 5 pm y el viernes sólo tuvimos presentaciones por la mañana. No estamos seguros si vamos a enseñar inglés este año debido a todos los cambios en el centro, pero definitivamente trabajaremos con los niños por la tarde para actividades extra curriculares. Las cosas han sido bastante agitado por lo que estamos trabajando en nuestra paciencia y va con el flujo.
Now lets talk about the fun stuff. The first day all the volunteers were at the center we had a meeting with Madre Miguel and Padre Juan (the founders of the WBC) and then went out for ice cream/ a walk around and out later that night for kabobs (which were amazing). The next day after our morning meeting we attempted the local transport system, which for Quito is buses. We attempted to go to old town or colonial town and ended up on the outskirts of it as well as around the Basilica. You can climb up the Basilica and there is a great view from the top but unfortunately it was an overcast day so we are planning to go on a clearer day for a better view. Ahora vamos a hablar de las cosas divertidas. El primer día en que todos los voluntarios estaban en el centro, tuvimos una reunión con Madre Miguel y el Padre Juan (los fundadores del WBC) y luego salimos para helados / un paseo por la noche para kabobs (que eran increíbles) . Al día siguiente después de nuestra reunión de mañana nos trató el sistema de transporte local, que es para Quito los autobuses. Intentamos ir a la ciudad vieja o la ciudad colonial y terminamos en las afueras de ella, así como alrededor de la Basílica. Puedes subir la Basílica y hay una gran vista desde la cima, pero por desgracia fue un día nublado, así que estamos planeando ir en un día más claro para una mejor vista. (Foto de abajo, la basílica)
Later that night we also went to a bar called the Turtle's Head not to be confused with the Turtle Club. On Tuesday through Thursday we stayed close to the center and explored the neighborhood around us. We went to a mall that is close by and found a few places that we would like to go back to. On Friday we got the afternoon off from meetings and went to a futbol (soccer) game later that night. Conveniently the stadium of La Liga (one of Quito's major soccer teams) is just a few blocks from the center. The match was vs. Barcelona which is another team from another city in Ecuador, not from Spain. Apparently the teams are huge rivals and the fans often get into violent fights. The police coverage at the game was crazy and very extensive. The atmosphere was great however and the match ended in a tie. The fans from the Liga side seemed pleased with the outcome as we were expected to lose. When we purchased the tickets for the game we actually got tickets for the next home game as well so in two weeks we will be attending another game! Liga fans for life! We also went out on the town Friday night and walked around old town on Saturday as well as visited the local food market just down the street from us. There happened to be some live music, as well as lots of markets. On Saturday night we went to a bar and watched the Mayweather/McGregor fight of which Mayweather won.
Más tarde esa noche también fuimos a un bar llamado la Cabeza de la Tortuga que no debe confundirse con el Turtle Club. De martes a jueves nos quedamos cerca del centro y exploramos el barrio que nos rodea. Fuimos a un centro comercial que está cerca y encontramos algunos lugares que nos gustaría volver a. El viernes tuvimos la tarde libre de las reuniones y fuimos a un fás tarde esa noche también fuimos a un bar llamado la Cabeza de la Tortuga que no debe confundirse con el Turtle Club. De martes a jueves nos quedamos cerca del centro y exploramos el barrio que nos rodea. Fuimos a un centro comercial que está cerca y encontramos algunos lugares que nos gustaría volver a. El viernes tuvimos la tarde libre de las reuniones y fuimos a un fútbol juego más tarde esa noche. Convenientemente, el estadio de La Liga (uno de los principales equipos de fútbol de Quito) está a pocas cuadras del centro. El partido fue contra Barcelona, que es otro equipo de otra ciudad en Ecuador, no de España. Al parecer, los equipos son enormes rivales y los fanáticos menudo entrar en peleas violentas. La cobertura policial en el juego era loca y muy extensa. El ambiente era genial sin embargo y el partido terminó en empate. Los fanáticos de la Liga parecían contentos con el resultado, ya que se esperaba que perdieran. Cuando compramos las boletos para el juego realmente conseguimos boletos para el próximo juego en casa, así que en dos semanas estaremos asistiendo a otro juego. ¡Estamos fanáticos de la Liga por vida! También fuimos a la ciudad viernes por la noche y caminamos por la ciudad vieja el sábado, así como visitamos el mercado de comida local justo bajando la calle de nosotros. Pasó a ser algo de música en vivo, así como muchos mercados. On Sunday we took a nice bus ride, costing $2.70 to a neighboring town called Otavalo home of the biggest outdoor market in the Americas. I bought a nice alpaca knit sweater a new necklace chain (since mine had broken) and a cute guinea pig (Cuy in spanish) toy with real alpaca fur. We ate lunch in Otavalo and took a bus back to quito for $2.50 for a total round trip cost of $5.20! When we returned Cinto, the volunteer from Italy made us pasta and we ended our first full week with full stomachs. Below are some pictures from Otavalo. Stay tuned for more! Ciao Buena Gente!
El domingo tomamos un buen paseo en autobús, cuesta $ 2.70 a una ciudad vecina llamada Otavalo hogar del mayor mercado al aire libre en las Américas. Compré un suéter de punto de alpaca agradable una nueva cadena de collar (ya que la mía se había roto) y un bonito Cuy juguete con piel de alpaca real. Comimos el almuerzo en Otavalo y cogimos un autobús de vuelta a quito por $ 2.50 por un coste total de ida y vuelta de $ 5.20! Cuando volvimos Cinto, el voluntario de Italia nos hizo pasta y terminamos nuestra primera semana completa con estómagos llenos.
