Children are crazy!/Los chicos son locos!

This week was our first with the children. We got to meet most of our classes and got our tentative schedule for the next month or so while wait for the final volunteer from the peace corps to arrive. As of now Nathan is with the older kids 7th, 9th and 10th graders, Colin is with the middle kids 6th, 8th and one 10th grade class and I am with the little ones 1st-5th grades. They number the grades a little differently compared to the US. The first graders are the US kindergarteners and second grade is first grade and so on. The school goes up to 10th grade which is really 9th grade so the kids are graduating when they are about 14, 15 or 16. They also study in special areas during 8-10th grade so that they can get good jobs after graduating and continue their education.

Esta semana fue nuestra primera con los niños. Llegamos a conocer a la mayoría de nuestras clases y nos dieron nuestro horario tentativo para el próximo mes o así mientras esperamos para el voluntario final de los cuerpos de paz para llegar. A partir de ahora Nathan está con los niños mayores 7mo noveno y décimo grado, Colin es con los niños de medio sexto, octavo, noveno y una clase de 10 º grado y estoy con los pequeños 1er-5to grados. Ellos numeran los grados un poco diferentemente en comparación con los Estados Unidos. Los estudiantes de primer grado son los niños de Kinder y segundo grado es de primer grado y así sucesivamente. La escuela va hasta el décimo grado que es realmente 9no grado así que los niños se gradúan cuando son cerca de 14, 15 o 16. También estudian en áreas especiales durante 8-10 grados para que puedan obtener buenos trabajos después de graduarse y continuar su educación.

For review or if this is the first post you are reading I am currently in Quito, Ecuador South America at the Working Boys Center in spanish El Centro del Muchachos Trabajadores. I am volunteering at the center teaching English as a foreign language. I am one of 3 volunteers who living at the center who are teaching English. There is a 4th volunteer who lives at the center who is from Italy and teaches informatics and the peace corps volunteer I mentioned who will not be living with us.

Para revisión o si este es el primer post que estás leyendo estoy actualmente en Quito, Ecuador Sudamérica en el centro del muchachos trabajadores. Soy voluntaria en el centro enseñando inglés como lengua extranjera. Soy uno de los 3 voluntarios que viven en el centro que están enseñando inglés. Hay un cuarto voluntario que vive en el centro que es de Italia y enseña la informática y el voluntario del cuerpo de paz que he mencionado que no va a vivir con nosotros.

We got a taste of what it is like to teach children this week and I think we all learned that you need a plan going into class or things are not going to go well. I now understand why my education major freinds had scripts for their class times. I went into one of my class rooms unprepared, with not enough supplies and the kids went crazy! I definitely learned my lesson. When teaching these children as well you have to take a different approach as well. The second week with the kids I got my act together and had more of a set plan for my classes. The 1-3rd graders are learning songs in english and I read them books. They absolutely love the songs. Their favorite currently is the fish song that helps them learn to count to 10. They ask me to play it several times in a row and I get to use it as a bribing mechanism for them to behave. The 4 and 5th graders are currently learning common classroom phrases such as 'sit down please' and 'put away your things.'

Nos dieron una idea de lo que es como para enseñar a los niños esta semana y creo que todos nos enteramos de que usted necesita un plan de ir a clase o las cosas no van a ir bien. Ahora entiendo por qué mi educación los principales amigos tenían guiones para sus tiempos de clase. ¡ Entré en una de mis habitaciones de clase sin preparación, con insuficientes suministros y los niños se volvieron locos! Definitivamente aprendí mi lección. Al enseñar a estos niños también tienes que tomar un enfoque diferente también. La segunda semana con los niños me dieron mi actuar juntos y tenía más de un plan de conjunto para mis clases. Los de 1 a 3 º grado están aprendiendo canciones en inglés y yo les Leo libros. Aman absolutamente las canciones. Su favorito en la actualidad es la canción de pescado que les ayuda a aprender a contar hasta 10. Me piden que lo juegue varias veces seguidas y lo uso como un mecanismo de soborno para que se comporten. Los alumnos de 4 y 5 º grado están aprendiendo frases comunes de aula como ' Siéntate por favor ' y ' guarda tus cosas '.

I am currently having the most trouble behavior wise with the 4th graders. The majority of the class does not want to listen to me; they run around the classroom and play fight each other while I am trying to teach. One of the main reasons for this problem is that there are almost 40 kids in the classroom. The plan is to split the class in half so that hopefully they will be calmer. This does mean though for the remainder of the month I will have 3 extra class hours a week. The month is thankfully already part over though so I will be able to handle it for a while. The other downside is that my class schedule has to be changed again. I also need to change one of my 1st grade hours to another time because currently I have them for 80min on Friday mornings and their attention span just does not allow for effective learning for that long of a time period.

Actualmente estoy teniendo la mayoría de los problemas de comportamiento sabio con los 4to grado. La mayoría de la clase no quiere escucharme; ellos corren alrededor del aula y juegan peleando entre ellos mientras yo estoy tratando de enseñar. Una de las principales razones de este problema es que hay casi 40 niños en el aula. El plan es dividir la clase por la mitad para que esperemos que se calmen. Esto significa, aunque para el resto del mes voy a tener 3 horas extra de clase a la semana. El mes es afortunadamente ya parte de encima, así que voy a ser capaz de manejar por un tiempo. El otro inconveniente es que mi horario de clases tiene que ser cambiado de nuevo. También tengo que cambiar una de mis horas de 1er grado a otro tiempo porque actualmente los tengo para 80min los viernes por la mañana y su lapso de atención simplemente no permite el aprendizaje efectivo para ese largo período de tiempo.

Most of the children at the center come from a background of poverty and working on the streets. The children would rather be working on the streets than sitting in the classroom. They say that they learn more on the streets than in the classroom and would rather be making money. While it is true that working on the streets can teach the children things they may not learn in the classroom it is no way to get out of poverty. The center teaches its members 10 values Loyalty, Personal Formation, Family, Religion, Instruction, Work, Recreation, Health and Improvement of living. With these values the families and children are able to better themselves and others to come out of the life of poverty. In all reality no one should live in poverty but there has been this fear instilled into us that if we help others before ourselves then we will be the ones in poverty. The opposite is true; when you put others before yourself and make sure that others are cared for, you become richer with a wealth that is worth more than all the money in the world. The center is a great place where others come first and family is the most important thing. I am so ecstatic to be a part of the largest family in the world and I'm so glad that I get to share it all with you!

La mayoría de los niños del centro provienen de un contexto de pobreza y de trabajo en las calles. Los niños prefieren trabajar en las calles que sentarse en el aula. Dicen que aprenden más en las calles que en las aulas y prefieren ganar dinero. Si bien es cierto que trabajar en las calles puede enseñar a los niños cosas que no pueden aprender en el aula no es manera de salir de la pobreza. El centro enseña a sus miembros 10 valores de lealtad, formación personal, familia, religión, instrucción, trabajo, recreación, salud y mejoramiento de la vida. Con estos valores, las familias y los niños son capaces de mejorar a sí mismos y a otros a salir de la vida de la pobreza. En realidad, nadie debe vivir en la pobreza, pero ha habido este temor inculcado en nosotros que si ayudamos a los demás antes que nosotros mismos, entonces seremos los que están en la pobreza. Lo contrario es cierto; Cuando pones a otros antes que a ti mismo y te aseguras de que otros son atendidos, te vuelves más rico con una riqueza que vale más que todo el dinero del mundo. El centro es un gran lugar donde otros vienen primero y la familia es lo más importante. ¡ Estoy tan extasiado de ser parte de la familia más grande del mundo y estoy tan contenta de poder compartirla contigo!
